Brain training...
September 1, 2011-
We are strengthening our observational drawing skills by looking at and using Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. We are drawing upside down, making vases out of faces, and drawing blind! All this relies on the fact that our dominant, verbal, logical, sequential brain is dirrerent from the visual , intuitive, creative brain. Lets unlock its potential!

Negative is not always bad.
September 13-16 Negative Space! Negative space is the area around the main design. This week we explored relationships between positive and negative shapes, starting with drawings of the space around a chair. Then we switched to paper cutout designs. Check out some of the artwork.

Lets add some value.
September 19-23, 2011 Value drawing. We are taking images of animals, expanding them using grid drawing, and then matching values to create large, interesting value studies. Click on the picture to get another art teacher's website to see more students like ours.
Drawing Field Trips
Last week of September, beautiful weather, let's go outside! Take all those skills we have been building up, and apply them! All week long looking at the wonderful architecture of our town. One will be finished with paint. Several of the homeowners were interested in getting a copy of the students works too! Here my first hour class is drawing the historic Phelps Building, from 1895.
First 3-d Project: Plaster carving
In order to carve into a plaster block, we have to make a plaster block, so we are pouring plaster into molds we made.
The focus will be on ancient roman and greek art, and will be a low-relief carving.

Portrait of a Place
We looked at the artwork of Edward Hopper, who said, "If you could say it in words there would be no reason to paint." So we started painting our best drawing using tints and shades (light and dark) and custom colors. These are a few in progress...
Dia de Los Muertos
We looked at sugar skulls, calaveras de azucar, and the artwork of Jose Guadalupe Posada for this one day project.
HipHop LetteringWords have meaning. We are personalizing the lettering process through street style imagery. Here are our resources, many of which came from the website http://graffitidiplomacy.com/index.html
